Xbox Set to Launch on Android Devices Amid Ongoing Court Battle
Following a recent US court ruling that Google must open its Play Store to allow for third-party app stores and alternative payment options, Microsoft is taking advantage of this new opportunity. Sarah Bond, president of Xbox, expressed her excitement about the ruling, stating that it “will allow more choice and flexibility.”
Xbox to Offer Games Directly on Android Devices
Starting in November, players will be able to play and purchase Xbox games directly from the Xbox App on Android. This move is possible due to the court order requiring Google to stop forcing apps to use its own billing system and allow for third-party app stores inside Google Play itself.
Benefits for Xbox Users
Until now, buying Xbox games on a mobile device has been a complicated process. With the new Xbox Android app, users will be able to purchase and play games directly on their devices. Most games will likely not run directly on Android, but the revamped app will allow for direct streaming of purchased or subscribed games to Android devices.
Microsoft Expands Xbox Brand Availability
Microsoft has been quick to expand its Xbox brand’s availability outside its hardware. This move is part of a larger effort to differentiate itself as a games platform, not just a console hardware vendor. However, Google has announced that it will appeal the verdict and specifically ask for the remedies that would make Xbox’s app more capable to be paused while the appeal is pending.
