Xbox Reclaims Call of Duty Throne: Game Pass Fuels Decade-Long Victory
For the first time in a decade, Call of Duty reigns supreme on Xbox, surpassing all other platforms. This victory is largely attributed to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 launching on Game Pass.
Game Pass: The Key to Success
Microsoft Gaming CEO, Phil Spencer, credits Game Pass’ accessibility. Unlike other platforms focused on individual devices, Game Pass offers a broader, more connected experience for creators and players.
The last time Xbox led in Call of Duty popularity was in 2014, following Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare‘s release. Spencer highlights the collaborative marketing efforts between Microsoft and Activision in promoting Black Ops 6’s Game Pass availability as a crucial factor.
Spencer expressed pride in the teams’ synergy, noting their excellent work in promoting the game via Game Pass. Post-launch, the release of Black Ops 6 Season 1, including a creepy new Easter egg for Nuketown, further boosted engagement.
A Shift in Strategy
Before Microsoft’s 2022 Activision acquisition, Xbox’s Call of Duty dominance was partly due to Microsoft’s investment in exclusive DLC and marketing rights. Game Pass, however, represents a significant evolution in their strategy.
The success of Black Ops 6 on Game Pass showcases a new era for Call of Duty, highlighting the power of subscription services in shaping the gaming landscape.
