Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness Receives First Balance Patch in 20 Years
Get ready for a blast from the past! Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness, originally released in 1995, has just received its first balance update in over two decades. This update, part of the new Warcraft Remastered Battle Chest celebrating the franchise’s 30th anniversary, brings significant gameplay changes.
What’s Changed?
The Warcraft 2: Remastered patch 1.0.1 focuses on resource costs and ability durations. Archers and Axe Throwers receive significant buffs, with faster upgrades and increased damage. Paladins and Death Knights also get some improvements.
A major change is the nerf to the Ogre Mage’s Bloodlust ability. Previously overpowered, its duration is reduced, mana cost increased, and damage buff applied after armor reduction. It remains valuable, but less dominant.
These balance changes are the first major gameplay updates since patch 2.02 for the 1999 Battle.net version, making this a truly momentous occasion for long-time fans. The update also includes the re-addition of classic victory/defeat screens, an Alliance menu for online multiplayer, and multiplayer lobby countdowns.
The Future of Warcraft 2
Note that the non-remastered versions of Warcraft 1 and 2 will be delisted from GOG on December 13. However, GOG will continue to provide tech support.
This update breathes new life into a classic real-time strategy game, offering both nostalgia and updated gameplay for players old and new. Download the patch and relive the glory days of Warcraft 2!
