Vessel of Hatred: Mephisto’s Story in Diablo 4 Expansion
Diablo 4 ends with a cliffhanger, setting the stage for the first expansion, Vessel of Hatred. The Lord of Hatred, Mephisto, is trapped within a Soulstone by Neyrelle, who disappears, leaving behind a cryptic note. In Vessel of Hatred, players must find and help Neyrelle before it’s too late.
Neyrelle’s Struggle with Mephisto
Neyrelle is seeking the Vault of Light, where she hopes to destroy Mephisto for good. However, his presence within the Soulstone corrupts the world around her, catching the attention of the Spiritborn, the guardians of Nahantu’s jungles. Players will team up with a new character, the wise Spiritborn elder Eru, in their hunt for Neyrelle.
Mephisto’s Goal and Abilities
Mephisto is one of the Prime Evils, and his goal is to sow hatred and division among the people of Sanctuary. Though he is still trapped in the Soulstone, his wolf projection returns, serving as his voice and a way for him to spread his message. His corruption seeps from the Soulstone into the world around it, making the Soulstone almost radioactive in nature.
The Story of Vessel of Hatred
The expansion revisits history, returning Mephisto to one of his old seats of power, the jungles of Nahantu. However, it’s also expanding on the region and its lore, adding new wrinkles to the story of Akarat, the Zakarum, the Light, and the Spirit Realm. The focus of Vessel of Hatred is on Mephisto and Neyrelle, but one of Diablo 4’s main characters, Lorath, is notably absent.
