Unpacking Creator Calls Out Nintendo for Fake Games on eShop
Wren Brier, creative director of the indie hit Unpacking, is criticizing Nintendo for the abundance of copycat games on its Switch eShop. Brier highlights several games using the Unpacking name, including Unpacking Universe Dreams from CGI Lab, which clearly imitates the gameplay and branding of the original.
Nintendo’s Lack of Response
Brier publicly stated that Nintendo hasn’t responded to reports about these games despite them being on the eShop for over two weeks. She calls them “egregious scams” that deceive customers into purchasing cheap imitations.
This isn’t the first time Unpacking developers have encountered this issue. A similar incident occurred in 2022, with a copycat game removed from iOS and Google Play stores after topping download charts.
Concerns Beyond Unpacking
The Switch eShop has faced scrutiny before, particularly regarding the prevalence of adult content. In 2022, Nintendo revised its eShop rules in response to this criticism. This situation with Unpacking highlights ongoing concerns about quality control and protection of intellectual property on the platform.
