Ubisoft Launches First Blockchain Game with Expensive NFT Options Available
Ubisoft has released its first-ever blockchain game, the tactical NFT battler Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles. The game is on PC and free to start, though players can purchase figurines with which to battle using either in-game gold or cryptocurrency.
The Game’s NFT Options
The game’s marketplace allows players to buy figurines, which are NFTs, from a range of prices. These figurines can be used to battle other players in turn-based affairs with squads of three figurines. It appears to be possible to play the game without purchasing figurines, though those willing to pay more will surely have more success in battles.
Ubisoft’s Statement on the Game
Francois Bodson, studio director at Ubisoft Paris, described the game as “offering deep strategic gameplay featuring unique in-game assets and several exciting innovations”. He compared it to a physical trading card game, highlighting the game’s procedurally generated figurines, each with distinct stats, and an open marketplace letting players compose their teams on a peer-to-peer basis.
A New Era for Ubisoft?
This move is interesting, considering other developers have slowly backpedalled on their enthusiasm for cryptocurrency. Ubisoft’s NFT bosses have previously stated that players just “don’t get it”, but it seems the company is still committed to exploring new ways of playing and bringing more value to players through blockchain technology.
Conclusion
The launch of Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles marks a significant step for Ubisoft in the world of blockchain gaming. While it remains to be seen how successful the game will be, it’s clear that the company is committed to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in gaming.
