Sunderfolk: Streamlining Tabletop RPG Fun
Sunderfolk is a four-player co-op turn-based RPG designed to make tabletop gaming more accessible. Players collaborate through a story narrated by a game master, perfect for weekly game nights. While lacking the narrative freedom of Baldur’s Gate 3, its curated narrative and binary choices create a unique experience.
Gameplay and Characters
Choose from six classes: Arcanist, Bard, Berserker, Pyromancer, Ranger, and Rogue. Play as anthropomorphic animals, the Sunderfolk, fighting the shadowstones’ corruption. Playable in-person or virtually, using a phone for individual character actions and a shared screen for gameplay.
Inspiration and Design
Inspired by Gloomhaven, Sunderfolk simplifies setup and rules. It features a relationship tracker allowing players to befriend and romance NPCs. Gameplay alternates between intense mission phases and relaxed in-town interactions. Players can even name elements of the game world, adding personalization.
Narrative and Voice Acting
The game master, voiced by Anjali Bhimani, narrates the story and player choices. Player characters are silent, leaving roleplaying to the players. Mission selection offers some agency, balancing curated narrative with player choice. Solo play is possible, but requires controlling at least two heroes.
Accessibility and Launch
Sunderfolk aims to lower the barrier to entry for tabletop RPGs. Its streamlined design and virtual play options make it easier for friends to play together, regardless of location. The game launches on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC in 2025.
