Steam Lets You Control Game Update Downloads
Steam is testing a new feature in its beta client that gives users more control over game updates. By default, Steam currently decides when to download updates based on factors like recent playtime and available bandwidth. This often means updates download automatically, even for games you haven’t played recently.
Take Control of Your Updates
The new option, found in the beta client’s Downloads settings, allows you to change this behavior. You can choose to have Steam manage updates as it currently does, or select the option to only download updates when you launch a game.
This is particularly beneficial for users with bandwidth caps, as it prevents large game updates from consuming data unexpectedly. It allows you to hold off on updating a game until you are ready to play it.
Customizing Your Download Preferences
Valve has also improved the per-game download settings, providing clearer descriptions. These per-game settings can override the global setting you choose in the main Downloads section. You can now manage both global and per-game settings within the Steam client’s Downloads settings.
This update provides greater flexibility and control over game updates, making Steam a more customizable experience for all users. Head to the Steam beta client to try it out!
