Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Preview – A Glimpse into the Future of Gaming
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is one of the most anticipated games, and Digital Foundry recently got a chance to preview the PC version. The game is developed by Saber Interactive, and it’s clear that they’ve done a fantastic job of capturing the Warhammer 40,000 aesthetic.
A Visual Masterpiece
The game’s environments are grand in scale, with dense swarms of tyranids and absolute carnage in combat. The sense of density is heightened by the impressive technical capabilities of the Swarm engine. The game’s visuals are impressive, with colossal, heroic figures, and massive-scale gothic architecture.
Performance and Scalability
The game’s performance is impressive, with the ability to sustain a native 4K resolution at 60 frames per second on high-end hardware. However, the game is heavy on the CPU, which poses challenges for the current generation of consoles. The game’s scalability is evident, with the ability to deliver a dynamic 4K 30 or a less stable 1440p experience targeting 60 frames per second.
Technical Issues and Feedback
The preview code had some technical issues, including stuttering and shader compilation-based hitches. However, Saber Interactive has taken feedback on board and is addressing these issues. The game’s PC specs requirements may look onerous, but the preview code showed plenty of scalability on the graphics side and support for upscalers.
The game is genuinely thrilling, with an excellent balance between ranged, projectile gunplay and close-quarters melee combat. The relentless nature of the combat may prove fatiguing, but the preview phase was enjoyable, and we look forward to seeing the complete game.
