Sony Kills Secret God of War Live Game
Sony’s ambitions for live-service games continue to shrink. Initially planning a dozen new titles, the number dwindled to six by the end of 2023, following the release of Helldivers II and the poorly-received Concord. Now, two more unannounced projects have been canceled.
Canceled Projects
One canceled game was from Syphon Filter and Days Gone developer Bend Games. The other, more surprising cancellation, was a live-service God of War game in development at Bluepoint Games for several years. While these studios remain open, their next projects are unannounced.
The challenges of the live-service model are highlighted by the failures of games like Concord, Anthem, and Redfall. Sony’s canceled projects also include a Spider-Man game, Twisted Metal, and a Bungie title called Payback.
Despite these setbacks, Sony is still moving forward with Bungie’s Marathon and Fairgames from Haven Studios.
