Sonic Rumble Ditches Gacha Mechanics in Favor of Fair Play
Sonic Rumble, Sega’s upcoming mobile and PC game, is taking a unique approach to monetization by ditching gacha mechanics in favor of fair play. The 32-player battle royale game will be free-to-play, but won’t be pay-to-win, with a season pass as its main monetization model.
No Gacha Mechanics in Sonic Rumble
According to game director Makoto Tase, the decision to avoid gacha mechanics was made with the global market in mind. In an interview, Tase stated that gacha mechanics are not popular in the West, and Sega wants to create a casual system that allows players to buy what they want quickly for a fixed amount.
Sonic franchise lead Takashi Iizuka added that the starting point of the project was to create a mobile game that would sell globally, and the monetization model was designed with global standards in mind.
Monetization Model
Instead of gacha mechanics, players will spend in-game Rings on cosmetics, which will be updated daily. Rings are obtained through play to raise your score and double as in-game currency.
