Saving a Giant Retro TV from Demolition
Retro gamers appreciate CRT TVs for their authentic, lag-free experience with older consoles. However, the size of most CRTs (20-30 inches) might deter modern gamers. Sony’s KX-45ED1 (PVM-4300), a massive 45-inch CRT, is legendary but rare.
A confirmed white whale sighting
Shank Mods, a retro gaming enthusiast, embarked on a quest to save a PVM-4300 from demolition in Japan. A tip led him to a Chikuma Soba restaurant, facing demolition. With help from local game developer Bebe Tinari, the TV’s existence was confirmed. Shank Mods arranged for the 440-pound TV and its 171-pound stand to be shipped to the US.
The shipping process was challenging but successful, thanks to a sponsor covering the substantial costs. The video details the TV’s journey and restoration.
It belongs in a museum
The full video shows the unboxing and the TV’s functionality. Shank Mods discusses the TV’s internal design and calibration. He hopes to create a public display for this unique piece of gaming history.
