Roblox Enhances Child Safety Measures

Roblox has announced significant updates to its safety features, aiming to better protect its young users. These improvements follow recent criticism regarding the platform’s safety protocols and multiple reports of child exploitation.

New Parental Controls and Features

Parents will now be able to remotely manage their children’s accounts, view their friends lists, and set time limits for gameplay. Additional changes planned for the coming months include restricting direct messaging for users under 13 and limiting in-game interactions to public messages only.

Roblox is also simplifying content labels and limiting game access for children under nine. These changes build upon previous updates requiring parental access for certain chat features and banning social hangout experiences for children under 13 due to potential risks.

Addressing Past Criticisms

Roblox acknowledges past criticism regarding child safety and states that these updates follow extensive internal research, including surveys with parents and children, and consultations with child safety experts. The company claims these updates have already received praise from organizations like the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) and the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI).

Roblox Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman stated that as the platform grows, their approach to safety must evolve. These recent changes represent a significant step in that evolution.
