Roblox Casinos: Kids Gambling, Lawsuit Filed
The Problem
Illegal online casinos are using Roblox accounts to let children gamble. These third-party sites, like BoxFlip and RBLXWild, aren’t on Roblox itself but use Roblox logins. Users gamble with Robux, Roblox’s in-game currency, and winnings are exchanged for cryptocurrency, then real cash.
A 16-year-old American teen told Sky News he spent a substantial amount of money starting at age 14, believing it was a way to earn money before becoming addicted to the thrill of betting.
Roblox’s Role
This isn’t the first time Roblox has faced accusations of exposing minors to inappropriate content. A 2023 lawsuit claims Roblox failed to protect underage users and profited from their actions. A US district judge ruled the lawsuit can proceed, citing Roblox’s design choices that seemingly put children at risk. While Roblox claims to have taken steps to remove these casinos, the lawsuit alleges insufficient action.
The Lawsuit
The judge noted Roblox incentivizes developers to create addictive, high-spending games. Roblox denies wrongdoing and says it employs methods to detect and disrupt bot accounts. One BoxFlip owner stated that lawsuits are a “part of doing business.”
The Bottom Line
Children are facing significant online dangers, and this illegal gambling activity highlights a serious issue requiring attention.
