Riot Games Announces Second Round of Layoffs This Year Again
Riot Games, the developer of League of Legends, has announced its second round of layoffs this year. This move comes after the studio laid off 530 employees in January, citing unsustainable costs that left no room for experimentation or failure.
Reasons Behind the Layoffs
In a statement shared on social media, Riot co-founder Marc Merrill explained that the latest round of job cuts is not about reducing headcount to save money, but rather about ensuring the company has the right expertise to continue making League of Legends great for another 15 years and beyond. Merrill also emphasized that team effectiveness is more important than team size.
Support for Affected Employees
Riot has announced that it will be supporting affected employees with a severance package that includes a minimum of six months’ pay, annual bonus, job placement assistance, and health coverage.
Reassurance to League of Legends Fans
Merrill reassured League of Legends fans that the layoffs will not slow down work on the game. He stated that the company is investing heavily in solving today’s challenges while also building for the future.
Industry Impact
The layoffs at Riot Games are part of a larger trend in the gaming industry, with around 13,000 industry employees believed to have lost their jobs since the start of the year.
