Poker Pro’s Winning Streak: Cheat or Luck?
A Winning Streak Under Scrutiny
Mike Postle’s incredible winning streak at Stones Gambling Hall in California raised suspicions. Professional poker player Veronica Brill believed Postle was cheating.
Postle consistently outperformed top players, leading to his nickname, “the Messiah.” One particular hand against Marle Cordeiro highlighted his unusual play style.
The hand involved a Texas Hold’em game. Seven of nine players folded early. Postle, holding a queen of diamonds and jack of hearts, faced Cordeiro. The flop showed an 8 of spades, 9 of diamonds, and jack of diamonds, giving Postle a pair of jacks. The turn was a 4 of spades, and Cordeiro bet $600.
Surprisingly, Postle folded. Cordeiro had the best possible hand (“the nuts”), a queen-high straight. Postle’s decision, while seemingly illogical, was a shrewd move given Cordeiro’s strong hand. The incident adds fuel to the debate surrounding Postle’s extraordinary winning streak.
