Palworld Alters Summoning Mechanic
Responding to Legal Action
Palworld developer, Pocket Pair, has updated the game, removing the Pokéball-style Pal Sphere summoning mechanic. This change comes as the studio battles a patent infringement lawsuit filed by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company.
The v0.3.11 patch notes detail the alteration. Instead of aiming and throwing Pal Spheres to summon creatures, Pals now appear directly beside the player. The UI aiming reticle is also only visible while aiming.
While Pocket Pair hasn’t explicitly stated the reason, the timing suggests a connection to the ongoing lawsuit. Nintendo’s September lawsuit cited “multiple” patents, primarily concerning summoning and capturing characters via thrown objects.
Pocket Pair maintains its stance, declaring it will continue to defend its position legally. Although unconfirmed, the update may be a response to the lawsuit. Eurogamer has reached out to Pocket Pair for comment.
Game Development Continues
Despite the legal challenges, Palworld’s development continues. Pocket Pair hints at a presence at The Game Awards this week, promising viewers won’t want to miss it.
