Mortal Kombat 1 Khaos Reigns Review and Gameplay Analysis
Mortal Kombat 1’s time-twisting campaign ended on a high note, but the Khaos Reigns DLC expansion fails to deliver a satisfying storyline. The expansion features five chapters, with three focusing on new roster additions: Cyrax, Sektor, and Noob Saibot. Unfortunately, each chapter plays out in the same monotonous structure, lacking variation and experimentation.
A Monotonous Structure
The storytelling is plagued by rushed story beats and weak dialogue, making the experience feel confined and rigid. The cutscenes are hurt by lines that sound like they were pulled from a thesaurus, while Johnny Cage’s attempts at banter fall flat. The story beats with massive potential are wrapped up quickly, without any real conflict or room for the story to breathe.
New Roster Additions and Animalities
On a positive note, the three new roster members offer a fun and unique style that thrives on experimentation. Sektor’s ordnance and quick-drop attacks make her a formidable foe, while Cyrax’s bomb-based attacks are incredibly cool. Noob’s shadowy, portal-summoning tricks make him the most interesting character of the three. The new Animalities, which allow characters to transform into wild beasts and dispatch opponents with primal flair, are also a highlight. These include Mileena’s mantis transformation and Noob’s double-crocodile Animality.
A Missed Opportunity
Despite the new roster additions and Animalities, the weakness of Khaos Reigns’ story expansion is a major disappointment. The original story of MK1 concluded with a sense of open-endedness, but Khaos Reigns sets a low bar for future narrative elaboration. The excitement of the original ending is gone, replaced by trepidation and unease over where the story might go next.
