Morgan Metal Detector Game at Steam Next Fest Review

Morgan: Metal Detective is a game that has piqued my interest, and I’m hoping it will offer a treasure trove of human emotion and life. The Steam Next Fest demo, available now, is a little short, but there’s promise here.
About the Game
Morgan: Metal Detective is developed and published by Studio Morgan, and is set to release in 2024. The game can be downloaded on Steam.
Gameplay and Features
The gameplay is simple, where you scan the ground with your metal detector and dig if you get a signal. You’ll find trash, but hopefully, you’ll also find the missing items the village folk have mislaid. The game features an instant camera that lets you snap your favorite island views, while the rubbish you dig up can be traded in at a store to swap for new film. A journal tracks your progress, but it can be decorated with stickers and your photos, giving you a better sense of actually being on the island and documenting your time there.
Storyline and Voice Acting
The game’s broader, central mystery about the island itself pans out, and it’s likely to be tied to Morgan’s granddad in a way that tugs on your heartstrings. The voice acting is surprisingly decent, with Morgan voiced by the BAFTA-nominated Charlotte McBurney.
Final Thoughts
Morgan: Metal Detective isn’t the most content-rich game, but it has potential. If it eventually lets me live out my metal detecting dreams without actually having to get cold and wet in the outside world, I’ll be happy. The game feels a tad clunky with some less than ideal camera movement when playing with a mouse, but it’s worth checking out.
