Making Torches in Minecraft

Torches require only two simple items, easily found early in the game:

• Place a Stick in the bottom middle box of a crafting table.
• Put Coal or Charcoal in the middle box.

Coal and charcoal are interchangeable. Sticks are crafted from planks, while coal is mined from stone areas. Charcoal is made by smelting wood and coal in a furnace. You get four torches per crafting recipe. Make lots, as you’ll need them frequently!

Beyond Basic Torches

Torches are also used to craft other light sources: Combine a torch and a Carved Pumpkin for a Jack O’Lantern, or eight Iron Nuggets and a torch for a Lantern. While many light sources exist, most start with a simple torch, making this recipe essential.
