Mighty No. 9 3DS Preorders Cancelled After a Decade
Amazon is canceling preorders for the Nintendo 3DS version of Mighty No. 9, a game released nearly 10 years ago. Developed by Comcept and Keiji Inafune, the game was touted as a spiritual successor to Mega Man.
A Preorder Cancellation After Years
A BlueSky user reported that Amazon UK cancelled their 2022 preorder due to unavailability. This highlights that the 3DS version remained available for preorder years after its initial release on other platforms.
Kickstarter Controversy and Unreleased Versions
Mighty No. 9‘s Kickstarter campaign was infamous. The 3DS and PS Vita versions were stretch goals, unlocked when the campaign reached $3.5 million.
While the game launched in 2016 for PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, the 3DS and Vita versions appear to be indefinitely shelved.
Mixed Reception and Inafune’s Future Projects
GameSpot’s review criticized Mighty No. 9 for falling short of expectations, lacking artistry in level design and presentation. Inafune has since moved on to other projects, including Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, slated for release in 2025.
The cancellation of these long-standing preorders serves as a reminder of the game’s troubled development and ultimately, the unfulfilled promise of the 3DS and Vita versions.
