Kunitsu-Gami: A Unique Japanese Folklore Strategy Game
Capcom’s 2024 release, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, is a hidden gem. This real-time strategy game blends Japanese folklore, ghosts, and strategic worker management. While it didn’t meet sales targets, its unique design and historical context make it a noteworthy title.
Players protect the maiden Yoshiro as she purifies a mountain. Days involve rescuing villagers, assigning roles (Woodsman, Archer, etc.), and advancing Yoshiro. Nights are spent defending against monsters. Gameplay is a rhythmic cycle of day and night, culminating in a purification dance.
Classic Design
Unlike many modern games, Kunitsu-Gami offers a linear experience with optional replayability. It’s challenging but focused, eschewing excessive collectibles or in-game purchases. Its unique gameplay mechanics and unfamiliar folklore setting present a fresh challenge.
Traditional Art
The game’s aesthetic is deeply rooted in Japanese tradition. Character movements are inspired by Kagura dance, monster designs echo yokai and bakemono art, and the music blends traditional and modern sounds. Even the marketing collaborated with a Bunraku puppet theater troupe.
