Frostpunk Developer Cancels Console Game, Results in Layoffs
11 Bit Studios, creators of the acclaimed Frostpunk series, has announced the cancellation of Project 8, a console-focused game in development since around 2018. The decision, impacting approximately 37 team members at the time of cancellation, comes after accumulated delays and escalating budget concerns.
Reasons Behind the Cancellation
President Przemysław Marszał attributed the cancellation to several factors in a statement. He cited a shift in market conditions, noting that the initial vision for Project 8, a narrative-driven console experience, was conceived during a time when such games held stronger market appeal. The impact of COVID-19 also contributed to delays and increased development challenges. Ultimately, unresolved issues and an extended development timeline led to the decision to cancel the project.
Impact and Future Outlook
An unspecified number of developers will be laid off as a result. Some employees will be offered opportunities to transition to other projects within 11 Bit Studios. The studio’s recent success with Frostpunk 2, winner of the Best Strategy Game award at The Game Awards 2024 (link), offers a counterpoint to this difficult news. GameSpot’s review of Frostpunk 2 (link) described it as a compelling, though challenging, experience.
