Frostpunk Developer Cancels Project 8, Leading to Job Cuts
11 Bit Studios, the developer behind Frostpunk, has announced the cancellation of its console game, Project 8, resulting in layoffs. Project 8, launched in 2018, had a team of at least 37 people by September 2024.
Reasons for Cancellation
Despite significant investment and noticeable quality improvements in some areas, 11 Bit Studios cited unresolved issues and challenges that would require further budget increases and timeline extensions. Revised sales forecasts, reflecting a changing market environment, also contributed to the decision. Management ultimately lost confidence in the project’s profitability and quality.
Impact on Employees
While more than half of the Project 8 team have been reassigned, the cancellation led to a reduction in staff. Affected employees will receive severance packages and support finding new employment.
Future Projects
11 Bit Studios remains committed to other key projects, including Frostpunk 2 and The Alters.
The cancellation of Project 8 adds to the number of job losses in the game development industry in 2024.
