Former PlayStation Boss Wants MediEvil’s Return
Shawn Layden, former PlayStation boss, recently expressed his desire to see the MediEvil series revived in an interview with Eurogamer celebrating PlayStation’s 30th anniversary.
Layden’s MediEvil Wish
Layden, a fan since the original 1998 release, played a significant role in the franchise, contributing to a sequel and the PS4 remaster. He openly stated his wish for another MediEvil game, calling it his ideal “magic wand” project.
The MediEvil series, known for its Tim Burton and Monty Python inspired humor, faced localization challenges, as Layden noted the difficulty in translating its comedic elements for other audiences.
A Missed Opportunity: Tomb Raider
Layden also shared a story about his regret over missing the opportunity to bring Tomb Raider to PlayStation during the PS1 era. While working in Japan, he attempted to secure the game for the platform but ultimately failed, seeing it launch on Sega Saturn first.
MediEvil’s Legacy
The original MediEvil, developed initially by Millennium and later SCE Studio Cambridge (which became Guerrilla Cambridge before closing in 2017), paved the way for sequels, including MediEvil 2 (2000) and MediEvil: Resurrection (2005) for PSP. A remake of the first game was released in 2019 for PS4 by Other Ocean Emeryville.
Layden’s comments reignite hope for a new entry in the beloved action-adventure series.
