Embrace Failure, Find a Better Story in Citizen Sleeper 2
Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector, launching January 31 on Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass, PS5, Switch, and PC, builds upon its predecessor’s dice-driven RPG mechanics. Developer Gareth Damian Martin aims to create a “game master” experience for millions, rewarding player choices even amidst apparent setbacks.
A Dice-Driven Narrative
Players once again control a sleeper, a sentient android. The game features an aggressive auto-save, eliminating save-scumming and forcing players to engage with consequences. Each class has unique “push” abilities allowing dice re-rolls, turning failure into potential success. Martin emphasizes the importance of small, expressive choices, shaping the narrative through dice rolls integrated into diverse actions, from hacking doors to negotiating contracts. The six-sided die system’s familiarity enhances the feeling of chance and risk.
Designing for Failure
The challenge lies in incentivizing continued gameplay despite failure. Martin explains that designing without manual saves is a significant design factor. He uses the “push your luck” mechanic, where success comes with potential downsides, to keep players engaged. The game features varying difficulty levels, culminating in a permadeath mode for experienced players. The sequel incorporates more traditional RPG elements like party management, enriching the mechanical depth while retaining its unique identity, unlike many D&D-inspired games.
Embracing the Roll of the Dice
The game never alters dice rolls but instead constructs a world where failure sparks interesting narrative developments. Even success can lead to intentional failure for different story outcomes. Martin aims for a balance of success and failure to create compelling gameplay experiences. He hopes every player will encounter at least one moment where a risky “push” leads to a dramatic, hard-won success.
