Ecco the Dolphin: Could the Classic Series Be Returning?
Recent trademarks filed by Sega suggest a possible revival of the beloved Ecco the Dolphin series. Sega filed trademarks for “Ecco the Dolphin” and “Ecco” in Japan on December 27th, 2024.
A Blast from the Past
The original Ecco the Dolphin, released in 1992 for the Sega Mega Drive, captivated players with its unique underwater exploration and puzzle-solving gameplay. The game followed Ecco, a dolphin separated from his pod, as he navigated treacherous waters to reunite with his family. Sequels, Ecco: The Tides of Time and spin-offs followed, culminating in Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future in 2000.
What Does This Mean?
While the trademarks don’t guarantee a new game, they strongly suggest Sega is exploring possibilities for the franchise. The recent delisting of Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco: The Tides of Time from Steam might hint at a larger plan. Could a remake, remaster, or brand-new installment be on the horizon?
Other Sega News
Sega is also busy with other projects, including an open-world, massively-multiplayer Crazy Taxi reboot and new entries in the Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage franchises.
Only time will tell if Ecco will once again grace our screens, but the possibility is certainly exciting for fans of the classic series.
