Dune: Awakening: Console-First Design, PC Launch First
Dune: Awakening Prioritizes Console Controllers Despite PC Launch
A Unique Development Approach
Dune: Awakening, the upcoming survival MMO set in the Dune universe, is taking an unusual approach to its release. While the PC version will launch first, in early 2025, the game was designed with controllers in mind, according to producer Nils Ryborg.
Ryborg explained to VG247 that developing for consoles first simplifies the process. Porting a console game to PC is easier than adapting a PC-first title to controller use. This strategy also increases the likelihood of smooth gameplay on platforms like the Steam Deck.
PC Launch First, Console to Follow
Although the game is controller-focused, the PC version will be available first, with a planned release in early 2025. Ryborg acknowledged potential technical challenges related to console hardware limitations but expressed confidence in achieving good performance. However, this controller-first design means console players will likely have to wait until later in 2025, or even 2026, before they can experience Dune: Awakening.
Breaking the Survival Game Mold
This approach contrasts with many survival games that initially launch on PC. The decision highlights Funcom’s focus on a broad player base from the outset. Dune: Awakening aims to provide a compelling experience for both PC and console gamers, prioritizing a polished controller experience that translates well across different platforms.
