DLSS 4: Better Graphics, Faster Gaming
Through the looking glass: Early tests of Nvidia’s DLSS 4 show impressive improvements in game rendering. Digital Foundry and Eurogamer demonstrated the technology, highlighting its ability to eliminate upscaling glitches and add AI-generated frames.
Multi-Frame Rendering
Exclusive to the RTX 50 series GPUs, multi-frame rendering generates additional frames, potentially tripling or quadrupling the perceived framerate. While adding input latency, the penalty is less than with initial frame generation. Digital Foundry’s test on an RTX 5080 showed that adding a second AI-generated frame introduced around four milliseconds of latency, and a third added about two.
DLSS 4 Improvements
DLSS 4 uses a vision transformer, a significant upgrade from previous versions. This leads to substantial improvements in image quality, greatly reducing smearing, ghosting, and shimmering. Ray reconstruction is also improved. This vision transformer upgrade supports all RTX graphics cards, and the Nvidia app will allow users to update older games without developer patches.
Future Benchmarks Needed
The performance cost of DLSS 4 remains unclear. Future benchmarks will determine which RTX 20 and 30 series GPUs can handle it effectively, and the VRAM impact of multi-frame rendering needs further investigation. The RTX 5070’s performance with 12GB of VRAM will
