Cross-Platform Gaming: The Future of Video Games?
The gaming landscape is changing. For years, Xbox and PlayStation battled for supremacy, each with their exclusive titles. However, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer is pushing for cross-platform gaming, a move endorsed by Moon Studios’ Thomas Mahler.
A Shift in Strategy
Mahler argues that the current console rivalry is pointless, given the similar hardware and stagnant player base of around 100-150 million for over two decades. He believes that broadening access to games, regardless of console, is key to growth. This excludes Nintendo, whose unique position allows them to operate differently.
While Sony hasn’t fully embraced this approach, they’ve released some exclusives on PC, indicating a shift. Mahler suggests this is driven by profit. He predicts that if Xbox releases a superior console to the next PlayStation, Sony’s exclusive strategy might collapse.
Prominent Cross-Platform Titles
Several high-profile examples support this trend. Games like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Doom: The Dark Ages (originally Xbox affiliated) are coming to PlayStation 5. Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, the 2024 best-selling game in the US, is available across multiple platforms. Microsoft’s support for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 further reinforces this cross-platform movement.
The Future of Gaming?
The industry is evolving towards a more inclusive model, where the focus shifts from console wars to expanding the gaming community. Whether this represents the future of gaming remains to be seen, but the current trajectory points towards a more unified gaming experience across platforms.
