Catly Game: No AI, No Blockchain, Just Cats
Catly, an open-world cat game, has sparked debate about AI usage in its development. The hyperrealistic cats in its trailer led to speculation of AI involvement, a claim the developer, SuperAuthenti, strongly denies.
Developer Denies AI and Blockchain Use
SuperAuthenti issued a statement to IGN and Game Developer, clarifying that no generative AI was used in creating the trailer or the game itself. They also denied any connection to blockchain gaming or NFTs, refuting claims circulating on Reddit.
The statement was supported by showing in-progress trailer footage to the publications, seemingly confirming its non-AI origins. The game is slated for release on Steam, Nintendo Switch, and Apple Watch.
Connections and Contradictions
Despite the denials, some online users pointed out links between SuperAuthenti’s co-founder, Kevin Yeung (also co-founder of TenthPlanet, a studio reportedly working on blockchain games), and previous projects that appear to have utilized blockchain technology. The game also features testimonials from known web3 investors.
SuperAuthenti confirmed Catly’s development in Unreal Engine 5, using various software for the realistic fur and hair. The prevalence of AI in game development makes determining AI-generated versus hand-crafted content increasingly difficult. The company specifically stated that Catly is not a blockchain game and contains no NFTs.
