Cancelled Warhammer RPG: A Dark Fantasy Game Lost
A promising Warhammer RPG, developed by Thought Pennies, was unfortunately cancelled late last year. The news emerged from posts by former Thought Pennies employees on LinkedIn.
A Studio’s Sudden Shift
Thought Pennies, described as a role-playing game studio focused on social storytelling, recently underwent layoffs. Their CCO, Daniel Erickson, explained that a change in their publisher’s strategic direction resulted in the loss of funding for their project. This led to the studio downsizing.
While Erickson didn’t name the project, former employees revealed it was an unannounced Warhammer game built in Unreal Engine 5. One described it as a third-person co-op PvE action RPG with unique heroes, melee and ranged combat, and monstrous enemies in a dark fantasy setting.
Games Workshop’s Future Plans
This cancellation comes at an interesting time for Games Workshop. Following the success of Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree stated they are actively searching for their next big hit. Furthermore, Games Workshop and Amazon Studios have finalized plans to adapt Warhammer 40K for film and television.
Eurogamer has reached out to Thought Pennies for comment. The lost Warhammer RPG remains a tantalizing what-if in the world of gaming.
