Black Myth: Wukong’s Game Awards Snub
Black Myth: Wukong, despite its stunning visuals and gameplay, was surprisingly overlooked for the coveted Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2024. Game Science CEO Feng Ji expressed his bewilderment on Weibo, stating that he felt he “came all the way here for nothing!”
A Bittersweet Victory
While the Game of the Year award eluded them, Black Myth: Wukong did receive the Best Action Game and Players’ Voice awards. Feng Ji acknowledged the player frustration, interpreting it as a sign of “dignity and confidence” in the game.
He even revealed that he had prepared a Game of the Year acceptance speech two years in advance. Alanah Pearce, a former Sony Santa Monica writer, witnessed a member of the Game Science team crying after the loss, highlighting the emotional investment in the game’s success.
What Went Wrong?
Astro Bot Rescue Mission ultimately claimed the Game of the Year title, along with several other awards. The lack of clarity surrounding the Game of the Year criteria has sparked discussion amongst fans and critics.
