Black Myth Wukong PS5 Review: Flawed but Visually Stunning Game
Black Myth: Wukong is a visually stunning game from a technical standpoint, despite having some flaws in its design. The game’s developer, Game Science, had a chance to offer a more curated experience with the PS5 version, but unfortunately, it falls short due to some baffling design choices and visual cutbacks.
Game Modes and Performance
The game comes with three modes: quality, balance, and performance. However, these modes have some issues that detract from the overall experience. Quality mode targets 30fps but often fluctuates between 31 and 36fps. Balance mode, on the other hand, targets 45fps but suffers from judder due to its 60Hz container. Performance mode is the best option, but it comes with a strong sharpening filter that makes the image look crunchy.
Frame Generation and 120Hz Support
Game Science uses FSR 3 frame generation in performance mode, which allows for 60fps, but this comes with traditional frame generation artifacts and input lag. Unfortunately, the game does not support 120Hz or VRR, which would have improved the experience.
Visual Quality and Comparison to PC
Despite its flaws, Black Myth: Wukong still looks visually stunning on PS5. However, it does not match the quality of the PC version running at 4K with DLSS performance mode and ray tracing. The PC version offers more realistic shadows, lighting, and caustics.
Conclusion
Overall, Black Myth: Wukong on PS5 is a flawed but visually stunning game. The game’s modes and performance need improvement, and the lack of 120Hz and VRR support is disappointing. However, it is still one of the best-looking games on the console, and with some fixes, it could become a great experience.
