Backbone One iPhone Controller: A Solid Choice, But Room for Improvement
The iPhone gaming landscape is booming, with classic emulators, Apple Arcade, and streaming services. However, a lack of a quality first-party controller remains. While Bluetooth controllers exist, an attachable solution offers a more seamless experience.
The Backbone One controller presents a compelling option, providing a Nintendo Switch-like form factor. This review compares it to the Razer Kishi, highlighting strengths and weaknesses.
From Razer Kishi to Backbone One
The author previously used the Razer Kishi, praising its Xbox-like thumbsticks but criticizing its flimsy design and Lightning port reliance (now replaced by USB-C on newer iPhones). The Kishi V2’s Switch-style sticks further fueled the switch.
Solid Hardware, but with Trade-offs
The Backbone One boasts a sturdy build, unlike its predecessor. The PlayStation-styled buttons feel good, resembling the DualSense controller. However, the triggers and sticks offer less precision than the DualSense, feeling more akin to Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons. This is a significant drawback for games requiring precise aiming.
While a solid option, the Backbone One’s less precise controls might not suit all gamers. The need for more games optimized for this form factor remains.
