AMD FSR 4: A Simple Upgrade Path for FSR 3.1 Games?
Exciting news for gamers: AMD might make upgrading to their upcoming FSR 4 upscaling technology incredibly easy. A tipster suggests a simple “drop-in” upgrade from FSR 3.1 to FSR 4 for games already using FSR 3.1. This means a simple library file replacement could bring FSR 4’s enhanced upscaling to many games.
How the Upgrade Would Work
Instead of developers integrating a whole new FSR version, AMD could simply replace the backend FSR library file. This was suggested by Kepler_L2 on X, in response to a VideoCardz post. Their tweet stated: “The RDNA4 driver replaces FSR 3.1 DLL with FSR4”.
Potential Impact and Limitations
If true, this could quickly upgrade 40+ existing FSR 3.1 games to FSR 4. However, only games using FSR 3.1 will be eligible. FSR 3 compatibility alone might not suffice. This is because FSR 3.1 separated upscaling and frame generation libraries, simplifying integration.
FSR 4 Improvements
AMD’s CES demo showed FSR 4 offering superior 4K upscaling quality over FSR 3.1. It leverages AI acceleration hardware in RDNA4 GPUs and includes enhanced frame generation and “Anti-Lag 2” for reduced latency. Initially, however, FSR 4 will be exclusive to AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 GPU.
While unconfirmed by AMD, this potential upgrade path could be a significant boost for FSR 4 adoption.
