MultiVersus Removes Ad Following Copyright Infringement Claim
Charlie the Unicorn creator, Jason Steele, accused Warner Bros. of unauthorizedly using audio from his viral video in a MultiVersus advertisement. The ad, since deleted, showcased Reindog’s Unicorndog skin and featured audio allegedly lifted directly from Steele’s work.
Steele’s Response
Steele expressed his displeasure on X, stating that Warner Bros., a company with substantial revenue, used his work without permission. He clarified that he’s generally fine with non-commercial use of his work, citing examples such as YouTube videos and Twitch alerts. However, he emphasized that directly using his audio is not considered fair use.
He noted similar instances in large projects, like World of Warcraft, but highlighted the difference between referencing and directly using copyrighted material. Steele attributed the issue to an underpaid social media team member but ultimately held Warner Bros. responsible.
MultiVersus’ Development
MultiVersus, Player First Games’ debut title, has had a complex development journey since its 2022 open beta. Warner Bros. acquired Player First Games earlier this year as part of its strategy shift toward mobile and free-to-play games.
