Assassin’s Creed Unity: Notre Dame’s Virtual Restoration
Ten years after its release, Assassin’s Creed Unity continues to make headlines. This Ubisoft title, set during the French Revolution, features a remarkably detailed recreation of Paris, including Notre Dame Cathedral. A recent Ubisoft video revealed that the game’s depiction includes the iconic spire, despite its addition in 1859—70 years after the game’s setting. This artistic license was taken to reflect the modern perception of Notre Dame.
A Virtual Legacy Lives On
Following the devastating 2019 fire, Notre Dame’s restoration has been a monumental undertaking. Ubisoft’s collaboration with the Notre Dame visitors app leverages Assassin’s Creed Unity assets to showcase inaccessible areas of the cathedral. Furthermore, a free VR experience, Notre-Dame de Paris: Journey Back in Time, offers a virtual tour of the cathedral and a hot air balloon ride over 18th-century Paris.
Beyond Notre Dame
While Unity celebrates its anniversary, other Assassin’s Creed titles are also in the news. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate recently received a 60fps upgrade for current-gen consoles. The next installment, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, has been delayed to February 14, 2025, and will introduce a new direction for the modern-day storyline.
