Roblox Boosts Child Safety with New Rules
Roblox, a popular platform for preteens, has faced criticism for inadequate child safety measures. In response, it’s implementing significant changes to protect younger users from risks like grooming and exposure to inappropriate content.
Key Changes for Enhanced Safety
Starting next year, Roblox will restrict access for users under 13 to:
- Unrated experiences
- Social hangouts
- Experiences with free-form 2D user creation
Creators must now complete a questionnaire to make their experiences accessible to children under 13, ensuring they meet “All Ages” or “9+” ratings. Gambling content remains prohibited for this age group. The deadline for creators to complete the form is December 3rd.
Changes taking effect on November 18th will prevent users under 13 from accessing experiences involving free-form 2D user creation. Approved experiences include role-playing games, those using Roblox-moderated 3D assets, and short-form videos.
Further Safety Initiatives
These updates follow recent changes requiring parental permission for under-13 users to access certain chat features. Children under 9 need parental approval for experiences with moderate content labels. Roblox is also testing an age-verification feature using government-issued photo IDs for users over 13.
These measures aim to create a safer online environment for young Roblox users.
