Gearbox Fulfills Dying Borderlands Fan’s Wish
What happened? Terminally ill Borderlands fan, Caleb McAlpine, received early access to Borderlands 4 thanks to Gearbox Software. Diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, McAlpine worried he might not live to see the game’s release. His heartfelt request on Reddit touched Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, who promised to make it happen.
A Dream Come True
Gearbox flew McAlpine and a friend first class to tour their studio, meet developers, and play Borderlands 4. The experience extended beyond the game; they also received a VIP tour of the Omni Hotel at The Star, home of the Dallas Cowboys. McAlpine expressed immense gratitude for the “amazing” experience.
Gearbox’s History of Kindness
This isn’t the first time Gearbox has granted wishes to terminally ill fans. In 2019, they gave similar early access to Borderlands 3 fan Trevor Eastman, and even named an in-game item after him. They also honored Michael Mamaril posthumously by including a eulogy read by Claptrap in Borderlands 2 and naming an NPC after him.
