Microsoft Confirms Handheld Gaming Device in Development, But It’s Years Away
Microsoft is seriously pursuing the development of a handheld gaming system, though it’s still in its early stages. This confirmation comes from Xbox head Phil Spencer during an interview with Bloomberg, where he revealed that the project is currently in the prototype phase.
Microsoft’s Handheld Ambitions: A Look at the Future
While the handheld device is years away from release, Microsoft is actively exploring its potential capabilities and target markets. This project is inspired by the success of handheld gaming PCs like Valve’s Steam Deck and the Asus ROG Ally, which provide access to Microsoft’s Game Pass subscription service to a wider audience.
Microsoft is considering a similar device that could serve as a reference for other manufacturers, akin to their Surface devices. Despite the challenges of using Windows on small screens, recent improvements have enhanced the user experience.
Beyond Exclusivity: Microsoft Opens Up Its Games
The interview also discussed Microsoft’s changing stance on game exclusivity. The company has recently released games like Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, and Sea of Thieves for PlayStation and Nintendo platforms. Spencer clarified that no game is off the table for future releases on non-Microsoft platforms, even Halo, the flagship Xbox series.
Microsoft’s acquisition spree isn’t over, as Spencer indicated that they are interested in deals that expand their geographic diversity, particularly in Asian and mobile markets. This reflects a broader shift in Microsoft’s strategy to reach a wider audience and expand its presence in new markets.
