South of Midnight Documentary Explores Game’s World, Creatures, and Representation
Compulsion Games, the developer behind We Happy Few, has released a 30-minute documentary about their upcoming game, South of Midnight.
A Journey Inspired by the American South
The documentary, titled “Weaving Hazel’s Journey: A South of Midnight Documentary,” offers a glimpse into the game’s world, gameplay, and the creative process behind it. Creative director David Sears reveals that his childhood passion for exploration and storytelling inspired the game, particularly its fantastical creatures and monsters.
Sears explains that South of Midnight is a love letter to the South, with creatures inspired by Southern folklore and urban legends. Each region features unique creatures, creating distinct kingdoms with their own unique stories and rules.
Representation Matters
The documentary also highlights the importance of representation in games like South of Midnight. Ahmed Best, best known for playing Jar Jar Binks in Star Wars, serves as the game’s performance and voice director. He, along with the cast, emphasize the significance of having a strong Black female lead in a game set in the South.
Hazel actress Adriyan Rae shares her excitement about the impact the game could have: “When I think about how many games are set in the South with a strong Black female lead, I don’t recall that many. That in itself shows how important this is.”
A Unique Art and Music Experience
In addition to the documentary, Compulsion Games announced a special “The Art & Music of South of Midnight” box set, including an art book, vinyl soundtrack, comic book, fridge magnet, and more.
South of Midnight: A 2025 Release
South of Midnight is scheduled for release in 2025, available on Xbox Series X/S and PC. The game will also be available on Game Pass day one
