Bungie is reviving its Marathon IP to create a Player versus Player extraction game. The long-awaited next title from Bungie, creators of Destiny and Halo, was announced in the middle of today’s PlayStation Showcase.
Key Features of Marathon
- Becoming a runner in Bungie’s new sci-fi PvP extraction shooter, competing for survival, riches, and renown in a world of evolving, persistent zones.
- Full cross-play and cross-save capabilities for PS5, Xbox Series S / X, and PC.
- Set in a sci-fi universe in 2850, with “clone technology” that includes synthetic bodies and conscious shifting abilities.
Design and Story
Bungie has a tremendous amount of respect for the original Marathon games and wants to honor that, especially the mythology, story, and themes of the world. The game director Christopher Barrett explains, “We have a tremendous amount of respect for the original Marathon games and, from the very start, we’ve wanted to honor that, especially the mythology, story, and themes of the world.”
Marathon seems to be set in 2850 with cybernetic mercenaries known as Runners. The game will have references for players of the original first-person shooter that debuted in 1994 on the Mac. The game director also confirms dedicated servers for Marathon and “vigorous anti-cheat measures.”
Bungie hasn’t mentioned a release date yet, but the studio said in the past that it planned to launch at least one new IP by 2025. The next time you hear from them about Marathon, they’ll be able to show you the gameplay and will be much closer to launch.
