X-COM’s Legacy and a Potential Return
Julian Gollop, the mind behind the original X-COM (released as UFO: Enemy Unknown in the UK), is open to revisiting the series that launched his career. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Gollop expressed his contentment with being recognized as “the X-COM guy,” acknowledging the game’s foundational role in both his career and the strategy gaming genre.
The X-COM Guy is Happy
Despite creating numerous games since the release of X-COM, Gollop doesn’t feel constrained by the association. He’s proud of X-COM’s impact, especially considering the resurgence of turn-based games and the franchise’s revival by Firaxis with XCOM: Enemy Unknown.
He stated. “I am perfectly happy being known as the X-COM guy,”. “Can I ever beat that? Well probably not, no,”.
Open to Offers
When asked about a potential return to the X-COM universe, Gollop was enthusiastic, “Yeah, sure,”. He jokingly mentioned he’s “still waiting for the call from Sid,” referring to Firaxis’ Sid Meier.
New Avenues in Strategy
While fondly remembering X-COM, Gollop is also exploring new ideas. His current project, Chip ‘n Clawz vs. The Brainiods, represents a step outside the turn-based genre, aiming to bring fresh innovation to strategy games. To find out more you can check Eurogamer’s interview.
