Play Doom Inside a Microsoft Word Document!
A Word-Perfect Port of Doom
In a nutshell: Software engineer Wojciech Graj has ported the classic first-person shooter, Doom, into a Microsoft Word document! This 6.6MB document, available on GitHub, lets you play Doom within the Word environment.
To play, you’ll need a modern version of Microsoft Office or Word on an x86 system and must enable VBA macros. The game runs surprisingly well, offering a visual experience similar to the original, although sound is absent.
How it Works
The document contains the necessary game files (doomgeneric_docm.dll and doom1.wad) encoded in base64. A VBA macro decodes and loads these files, rendering the game within Word. The game uses a bitmap image for each frame and GetAsyncKeyState for keyboard input.
Controls are standard: arrow keys for movement, Control for firing, Space for interaction, and number keys 1-7 for weapons.
Compatibility and Limitations
While impressive, compatibility issues may arise. Older Word versions (like Word 2007) might not work, even with macro security warnings disabled. This ingenious port showcases the enduring legacy of Doom and the creative ingenuity of its fans!
