Star Wars Jedi: Survivor PS5 Pro PSSR Upgrade: A Significant Improvement?
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor initially suffered from significant post-launch issues with its PS5 Pro PSSR (PlayStation 5 Pro Super Resolution) upgrade, particularly noticeable foliage strobing. However, a recent patch has addressed many of these problems.
Performance Mode Improvements
The performance mode shows much-improved visuals. Pulsing and strobing are greatly reduced, with previously problematic areas now significantly cleaner. While some minor PSSR issues like noise and vignetting persist, the overall improvement is substantial. The resolution remains largely unchanged, maintaining solid performance.
Quality Mode Observations
In quality mode (targeting 30fps), the increased resolution makes the 4K output more convincing, though still not matching the quality of DLSS at a similar resolution. Issues like ‘black holes’ in ray-traced global illumination remain unaddressed.
PSSR’s Ongoing Evolution
PSSR is a first-generation technology, and its current instability and noise issues contrast with more mature solutions like Nvidia DLSS. However, PSSR shows sharper motion in head-to-head comparisons. Other games have addressed their PSSR problems by reverting to alternative upscaling or offering both PSSR and FSR options.
The future of PSSR, and its implementation in Jedi: Survivor and other titles, remains to be seen, with potential benefits expected from the new collaboration between PlayStation and AMD.
