Secret Level: The Master Chief and Doom Slayer Crossover That Never Was
Prime Video’s Secret Level anthology series explored various video game franchises, notably excluding Halo and Doom. Supervising director Dave Wilson and creator Tim Miller revealed attempts to secure these franchises failed.
Negotiation Challenges
Wilson explained that Secret Level’s novelty hindered negotiations, with executives citing conflicts with existing deals. Miller refuted claims they didn’t pursue Halo, stating they made an effort but Microsoft declined, the reasons remaining unclear.
The team even dedicated a weekend to writing a proposal to Microsoft for a Master Chief/Doom Slayer crossover, but their “big plea” was unsuccessful. While Wilson is friends with the creative director at id Software and both he and Miller have connections at Microsoft, the collaboration never materialized.
Existing Deals and Other Attempts
Microsoft’s existing Gears of War deal with Netflix and the cancellation of the Halo series at Paramount likely played a role. While no public Doom adaptations exist, a report suggests Peacock is pursuing a live-action series.
Secret Level did feature The Outer Worlds (Obsidian, a Microsoft subsidiary), along with Sony/PlayStation franchises like God of War. The series also attempted to secure other IPs, with Wilson mentioning some high-profile franchises that ultimately didn’t pan out due to other Hollywood opportunities.
The team even “begged” Valve for Half-Life rights, to no avail. While Secret Level season 1 received mixed reviews, season 2 is underway, leaving fans to speculate about future franchise inclusions.
